For the first time in the City’s history, the City of Columbia has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association’s (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the City’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2019-2020 Budget. 

The GFOA Award recognizes the City’s efforts in producing a comprehensive budget document that excels in four major categories: a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide and a communications device.  Columbia’s FY 2019-2020 Budget met the highest principles of governmental budgeting and is a reflection of the City’s goal to serve as a financially responsible City providing excellent services, a strategic planning goal set by the City Council. 

“What a great accomplishment for our City – our community should feel very proud.  This national award represents a significant achievement for Columbia, as it is the first time in our City’s history that we are honored with this award,” said Mayor Chaz Molder.  “It reflects the commitment of our City Council and City staff in ensuring and maintaining our City’s fiscal solvency while planning for the future.”
The GFOA is a major professional association servicing more than 18,000 appointed and elected local, state, and provincial-level government officials, and finance practitioners.  The GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting.  
“Once again the City’s Finance Department has been rewarded for their continuous efforts to ensure that our city’s financial narrative is clearly and effectively communicated for the benefit of our citizens,” said Tony Massey, Columbia City Manager. “Under the leadership of Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Thad Jablonski, Finance Department staff have succeeded in keeping our elected officials and our citizens informed by providing them with high quality, precise financial documents.”

The City of Columbia also received the City’s first Popular Annual Financial Reporting Award in July 2019 and the 21st consecutive Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from GFOA in August 2019.

“I would like to thank the City Council for its guidance and support in the production of this latest City budget document and commend the City’s Management Team and Finance Department staff,” said Assistant City Manager and Finance Director Thad Jablonski. “Awards and achievements such as these follow from hard work and dedication to excellence by the entire team.”

As the primary department designated to prepare the annual budget, the Finance Department will also receive a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation.
