City Receives 19th Consecutive GFOA Award

2017 GFOA Award

For the 19th consecutive year, the City of Columbia has been awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR). Assistant City Manager Thad Jablonski, who also serves as Finance Director, presented the Certificate of Achievement to the City Council at the August 9th City Council meeting.

The Certificate of Achievement is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting. According to GFOA, consistent receipt of this award represents a significant accomplishment by the City of Columbia and its management. The CAFR is judged by an impartial panel to meet the high standards of the program including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the City’s financial story while motivating stakeholders to read the CAFR.

“I am pleased to say that Columbia taxpayers can have confidence that our public funds are being managed in accordance with the highest standards of transparency and public accountability,” Mayor Dean Dickey said of the award. “This accomplishment is a direct result of the dedication and professionalism of the city’s Finance Department led by Assistant City Manager Thad Jablonski and our finance staff who work to clearly, accurately and effectively communicate the City’s financial picture to officials and the public.”

Jablonski states that the Certificate of Achievement should be understood as a “team effort”. “We have great people and I appreciate the city’s Finance Department staff who work as a team to ensure that the city provides Columbia citizens and businesses, elected officials and the City Manager with timely and accurate financial reporting. Our team works diligently each day to see city departments have the tools they need to operate efficiently while at the same time taking great care to make sure that all public funds are expended in accordance with the annual budget appropriation, always with an eye to save the city’s taxpayers money wherever possible.
