The City of Columbia is pleased to announce it has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the City’s Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the Fiscal Year 2020-2021 from the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). This award represents the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting and is a significant achievement for local government entities. Assistant City Manager/CFO Thad Jablonski led the initiative in receiving this established award. The City of Columbia has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award three times, FY 2018-2019, FY 2019-2020, and FY 2020-2021. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for FY 2020-2021 was awarded to 1,740 entities, with those being 1,169 cities, 265 counties, 267 special districts, 19 school districts, 10 college/universities, and 10 retirement systems.
“Our city team worked diligently to achieve this great accomplishment and we are proud to present this award to City Council and the community,” said Jablonski. “Recognition such as this reflects the strong, continued stewardship and support by our elected officials and also shows the hard work and financial discipline of the City’s management team. I would also like to thank Assistant Finance Director Steve Carden for his time, effort, and commitment in working with me to make the budget document a success, along with Liz Bermudez in the City Manager's Office and our Finance Department team.”
The GFOA, founded in 1906, represents public finance officials throughout the United States and Canada and promotes excellence in state and local government financial management. The Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program was established in 1984 to encourage and assist state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality. The budget is required to reflect the guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and Local Budgeting and the GFOA's best practices on budgeting. Approximately 1,800 governments, including states, cities, counties, special districts, school districts, and more have been recognized for transparency in budgeting. To earn recognition, budget documents must meet program criteria and excel as a policy document, financial plan, operations guide, and communication tool.
City Manager Tony Massey stated, “The City of Columbia being recognized by GFOA for the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award is a testament to our financial operations. Mr. Jablonski, his team, and the city department heads work diligently to make our budgetary process a success. We appreciate GFOA recognizing that success.”
