Illicit discharges are generally any discharge into the municipal storm sewer system that is not composed entirely of stormwater.

Examples Include:
  • Wastewater or sewer
  • Car wash wastewater
  • Automotive and mechanical fluids
  • Spills from roadway crashes
  • Carpet cleaning wastewater
  • Effluent from septic tanks
  • Cooking oils
  • Laundry wastewater/gray water
  • Improper disposal of auto and household toxics
  • Litter

  • Landscape irrigation or lawn watering with potable water
  • Diverted stream flows
  • Rising groundwater
  • Groundwater infiltration to storm drains
  • Pumped groundwater
  • Foundation or footing drains
  • Crawl space pumps
  • Air conditioning condensation
  • Springs
  • Non-commercial washin of vehicles
  • Natural riparian habitat or wetland flows
  • Swimming pools (if dechlorinated, typically less than one PPM chlorine)
  • Firefighting activities
  • Any other uncontaminated water source
